Compromise
A message from Zug
I feel that we have reached a point in our guild of a certain critical mass. We are teetering on the brink of a medium guild to a big guild. The step after that is a raid guild Id say. My call to action is this: We have to learn to compromise.
The following is a list of items I feel that the guild as a whole would like to have.
--A self-sufficient guild able to do end-game raid content on a regular basis.
--Very lax rules with a casual family atmosphere.
--No drama or interpersonal conflict
The problem I see now is that we can only pick two.
My reasoning is this:
--In order to be self-sufficient, we need to take on more people, and work on getting the existing people fit to do end-game content. As I said in a previous post, more people mean more personalities. It also generally means that we have to have more structure in order to keep the people happy.
--If we want to maintain a loose structure and a casual family atmosphere, we have to put in the effort, as a guild, to be civil, respect, and trust each other. It also means that taking on more people may dilute this fact if we dont work hard at it.
--If we want no drama or interpersonal conflict, we cant have conflicting personalities butting heads.
Personally, I choose to work towards being able to do end-game raid content, while keeping loose shop, and a fun atmosphere. In the end, its more work for me because I have to play more of a fatherly role, but I am fine with this fact. A guild full of rules is technically easier to run, because the people in charge end up being more like judges and organizers then actual leaders.
Now if you notice, that leaves the drama point out. I have accepted the fact that because we are running a loose ship, because we are taking on more people, we are opening ourselves up for drama. Knowing and embracing this fact, we should work our best and being able to deal with this fact.
By asking for everyone to compromise, it means several things: For example, compromising means you give up every Tuesday night to the guild, so we can do a guild instance run. It means biting your tongue when someone says something that pisses you off, or causes a wipe, if you know itll start a ruckus. It means sharing some gold or an item that you know someone needs or wants, so we can grow as a guild.
Its getting harder and harder for me to be a friend AND a guild master. I know this is a challenging part of being a leader. However, I cant run a guild by myself 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am relying on my officers and you to keep me nose-deep in information so I can spend my free time helping everyone have a good time.
What I have a problem with, however, is having to spend that free time ironing out wrinkles alone at a word processor instead of /dancing around with my guild mates in game. Anyone keeping me from doing the latter from now on will be dealt with accordingly.
/dancing in my watermelon costume is very important to me.
